Course Description

Not everyone who loves cooking great food wants to do it for a living. If you are a serious amateur, Culinary Arts will give you the skills and confidence to whip up truly outstanding meals at home.

In Pankow's Culinary Arts program, you'll become grounded in the fundamentals of cooking. You'll discover our Culinary Arts classes are fast paced, hands-on and taught by a passionate Chef - instructor. Kitchen terminology will become your second language.

What Students Will Learn

In Culinary Arts, you will:

  • develop nutritional plans
  • solve problems and attend to details
  • organize an event

The program is designed to prepare students for occupations in the hospitality industry. Learning includes both classroom and laboratory. Classroom work is designed to teach the basic and advanced techniques and procedures used in commercial food service. The lab work is used to teach functions of the commercial kitchen, short order cooking and dining room service.

Labs are divided into workstations and each student rotates from station to station for a period of two weeks. Students will prepare food for the Creuse Connection, a public restaurant at the Pankow Center.

School-To-Registered Apprenticeships (STRA) available only at the Pankow Center.

Course Information:

  • 910 Culinary Arts 1, grades 10, 11, 12 - 1 credit per semester
  • 913 Culinary Arts 2, grades 11, 12 - 1 credit per semester
  • 2 hour blocks
  • 2.0 credits per year

Course will fulfill the following graduation requirements:

  • Electives
  • Fine, Performing/Applied Art
  • Math Related (pending LCPS Board approval)

Certifications: Pankow's 2-year CTE Skills Certificate upon successful completion of program.

Industrial Certifications:

  • ServeSafe Credit
  • ProStart Certification
