Classroom Information

Homework:
There will be some homework in third grade.  Some students may have more homework than others may, as class work that is not finished during class time must be completed at home that evening.  Projects and test will require student to devote time in the evening to studying. Homework may be different each day depending on how much your child completes throughout the school day.  Homework will come home in your child’s homework folder.  Some examples of homework may include completing a math home link or journal page, logging reading minutes or studying for a test.  Please ask your child daily to share their homework folder to keep track of their homework.  I also recommend using the Homework Hotline at x 3491.
Students can improve their reading skills with practice at home.  I do require students to read 15 minutes each evening as part of their homework.  If your child seems to have an inordinate amount of homework, or never has homework, this might indicate that there is a problem with their study habits.  Please contact me if this problem arises.
Only a written note from a parent or guardian will excuse a child from incomplete work.  I do expect assignments to be done one time.  Papers marked “Late” will show a reduced grade.  Please review all of your child’s work regularly so you can give positive reinforcement for a job well done or to review errors, and/pr to be aware of your child’s progress.

Planners:
We have purchased Assignment Planners for your child.  Students will be responsible for filling out what homework they have at the end of the day in their planner.  Every day on the board will be the day’s agenda and homework.  The planners must go home each day.  Please review it each evening with your child, and make sure it is returned to their school bags so it is back to school the next day.  If the Assignment Planner is lost, there may be a replacement cost.

Materials:
Some suggested school supplies for third grade this year are:

· 1 backpack
· 1 box of crayons 24 or less
· 2 dozen number 2 pencils
· 8-12 washable markers
· 1 box of colored pencils
· 4 red pens
· 2 black dry erase markers
· 1 pencil box
· 4  2 pocket folders with fasteners (any colors)
· 1 expandable folder
· 6 glue sticks
· 1 box of Kleenex
· Composition book
· 2 spiral notebooks (70 sheets lined)
· 1 Lysol or Clorox disinfecting wipes
· $4.25 for Weekly Reader  (Please send in a sealed envelope with your child’s name on it and label it “Money for Weekly Reader)
· $5.00 for party money. (Please send in a sealed envelope with your child’s name on it and label it “Money for School Parties”)

If you need help purchasing acquiring the recommended supplies,  please see me.

Individual Needs:
In order to meet each student’s individual needs better assignments and projects may have to be modified or extended.  We know that all children are not identical.  Please help your child understand of others’ needs as they strive to meet their own needs.

Allergies:
If your child has any type of allergy, please inform us as soon as possible.

Snack:
There will be a set time each day for snack and bathroom breaks.  Please pack a healthy snack to tie your child over until lunch.

Birthday Treats:
Treats may be sent in to share for birthdays.  If your child’s birthday is over the summer, we can celebrate their half birthday, or at the end of the year.  There are currently 28 students in our classroom.  However, please do not send in cake, ice cream or candy.  I would appreciate only juice boxes to be sent in rather than pop.  Donating a favorite book to the classroom library is also an option.

Scholastic Book Club:
Order will be sent in approximately once a month for those who wish to participate.  Please pay with a check or money order only.  Do not send cash.  Please be sure to label it with your child’s name and write “Scholastic Book Club Money” on the front of the sealed envelope.

Parent Volunteers:
Parents are welcomed to help in the classroom.  The sign up sheet will be available at Curriculum Night.  An extra copy of this sheet is also attached on the "Welcome" page. If you are interested, please fill it out and bring it with you to Curriculum Night.

A Great Year Ahead of Us:
I realize this is a special time in your child’s life.  I will work hard to make it a valuable and memorable experience.  You may contribute by showing your interest in what we do, support our school, and encourage your child to apply their best effort.  I want you to know that I am dedicated to the success of your child academically, socially, and emotionally.  We are going to have a great year as a team in Room 13!
