Collaborative (Co-teaching)

Teaching Model

This year I will be collaborating and co-teaching with Mrs. Regnerus and Mrs. Walters in their classroom throughout this school year.  This allows your child to receive a portion of resource room support in their general education classroom.   I have worked closely and collaboratively with Mrs. Regnerus over the past two years and it has been a great success.   I am really looking forward to working closely with Mrs. Walters, as well, in also implementing a successful program to help meet the needs of all students. (Look for more information on the Collaborative Co-teaching Model below).

What is Collaborative Teaching?

Collaborative teaching refers to a teaching approach in which two teachers (regular education and special education) share teaching responsibilities within a regular education classroom.  Each teacher interacts with all students at various times throughout the co-taught experience.

Collaborative Teaching Philosophy

The philosophy of the Co-teaching model focuses on the belief that teachers can provide all students with an appropriate education that allows for the opportunity, and experience in order to meet the student’s individual needs.

Benefits of Collaborative Teaching

  1. Co-teaching encourages regular and special education teachers to be full partners in the development of alternatives for students who may experience difficulty in school.

  1. It introduces all students to a common curriculum, modifying and adjusting curriculum materials to meet the instructional needs of all students.

  1. Co-teaching makes students the focal point and encourages both regular and special education teachers to access each other’s expertise to solve problems, thus expanding teacher skills and instructional strategies.

  1. The program provides appropriate mainstream experiences for special education students in order to maximize the student’s learning potential within the general education environment.

  1. Regular education students’ benefit as well by having a second teacher in the classroom.  This second teacher can provide immediate help when it is needed at that time during the lesson.
