Welcome to Mrs. Walters’ Class-the Reef Undersea!

Here are some fun ideas for you to try at home that go along with our studies this year in class.

·       Preview our earth science solar system study by taking a virtual walk on the moon at http://www.smithsonianeducation.org/students/idealabs/walking_on_the_moon.html

·       In second grade life science we learn about animals and their habitats and food webs.  Do you like making collections?  At this website you can learn about a student with a turtle collection:  http://www.smithsonianeducation.org/idealabs/collecting/main.html

·       Or, checkout the cool penguin stuff at http://www.kidzone.ws/animals/penguins/index.htm

·       For some life science fun, make an insect craft or do an insect coloring activity at http://www.dltk-kids.com/crafts/insects/crafts.htm

·       Need some help in math learning about place value?  There’s a fun place value calculator that counts like crazy at http://www.math.com/school/subject1/lessons/S1U1L1GL.html

·       Practice those important addition facts with a game at http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/additiontest.html

·       Brush up on your telling time skills at http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/clock.html  or http://www.mathsyear2000.org/magnet/minus3/missinghands/index.html  or http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/StopTheClock/sthec3.html

·       Puzzled?  That’s what you’ll be when you take the challenge of these brain teasers: http://www.eduplace.com/kids/mhm/brain/gr2/index.html

·       Money problems?  You won’t have them any more if you practice these counting change and bills activities: http://arcytech.org/java/money/money.html

·       Here’s a couple of websites to inspire you to write!  http://www.eduplace.com/kids/hme/k_5/brightideas/ and http://www.thewritesource.com/topics.htm

·       What is more fun than maps?  Well, try this one to learn where the states are located. http://www.maps.com/games/jigsaw.html

·       Hey!  Not all online games are bad!  Check out these fun and thought-inducing ones from Public Broadcasting: http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/allgames.html

·       Finally (for now!), do you need some ideas for a good book to read?  This website gives great recommendations and excellent summaries.  Many of these books are available at our school library!  http://www.hbook.com/booklists/default.asp
