Welcome

Welcome to my website.  I am Cathy Ciolino the Learning Support Specialist at South River Elementary.  I currently support staff, students and parents in the areas of reading and writing.

Reading instruction consists of five main areas :  phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.  Teachers have been working with students identifying their strengths and weaknesses in these five areas.  Many students who are struggling in a specific area are being given interventions/activities from the Florida Center for Reading Research.  This website offers activities to work on the 5 Big Ideas for reading skills for students in grades K-5.  The website has these activities grouped for grades K-1, 2-3 and 4-5.  I hope you will find the attached link both informational and useful in working with your children at home.

Attached you will find a word document that contains Fry's 500 High Frequency Words.  These words are ranked in frequency order.  The first 25 words make us about a third of all printed material.  The first 100 words make up about half of all written material, and first 300 make up about 65% of all written material.  These words were typed in label format to be used to make word cards for games and fluency.  (Avery labels, 5160).

I am also attaching a Shape Go Map! (Power of Retelling) The Shape Go Map! is an excellent way to help children organize their thinking about a story.  When they have used this graphic organizer several times, they begin to internalize the organization and elements needed to retell a story and improve their comprehension.  Have fun sharing stories!

 Writing Tip

Adding details to our writing continues to be a goal for all students here at South River.

A wonderful strategy to add details and voice to writing is by using a little "Ba-da-ing!"  (Gretchen Bernabei)

What is Ba-da-bing?  It is a strategy that has the writer find an important moment in their writing to effectively add details and voice.  Writer's take that one moment and add the following:

Ba - Where were their feet or their character's feet at that moment?  My toes were wiggling under the warm, coarse sand.

Da - What did you or your character see, hear, taste, touch or smell at that presice moment?  I could feel the warm, sticky air from the ocean blowing on my face and through my hair.

Bing - What were you or your character thinking at that moment?  I thought, "I wish I could be this relaxed all of the time."

Remember - A little Ba-da-bing goes a long way in improving our writing!  Enjoy!
