L’Anse Creuse Public Schools’ hosts Internet Safety Awareness Parent Night

L’Anse Creuse Public Schools will host its second annual Internet Safety Awareness Parent Night Oct. 23, 2007, at the Frederick V. Pankow Center from 6-8:30 p.m. to make parents aware of the dangers of the Internet.  In addition, the week of Oct. 22, 2007, has been designated as Online Safety Awareness Week, a weeklong focus on activities within the schools.

“The Internet is a valuable tool for all ages, but awareness of the dangers is equally important.said Vikki Gray, Help Desk specialist.  The Internet Safety Team will provide to each building short videos on various topics of online safety to be used during Online Safety Awareness Week.

The Michigan Cyber Safety Initiative, presented by the Office of the Attorney General, will address the need to protect children from online predators.  Parents will also learn how to access the Michigan Sex Offender Registry, search and access a child’s social networking sites, view Internet history logs to determine where children have been online, turn on safe surfing filters, and obtain reliable information on parental control software.

Other sessions include: The Internet, Where It’s Always Midnight in Bangkok by Bruce Jenvey of PC Symmetry; Identity Theft by Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union; Chat Room Safety by Sgt. Chris Rojem of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Youth Services; 10 Technical Questions by Larry Chockley, L’Anse Creuse Public Schools’ network administrator; Cyber Bullying by two middle school principals; and Internet 101 by L’Anse Creuse Public Schools’ instructional technology coordinator.

“Sheriff Mark Hackel and Judge Sheila Miller will be on hand to show their support for this important event, added Gray.

The free event is for parents only.  Child care is available for children 2 years and up. The Frederick V. Pankow Center is located at 24600 F. V. Pankow Boulevard, about one-half mile south of M-59 off Gratiot, in Clinton Township.  To register, log on to besafe@lc-ps.org or for more information, check out our Web site at www.lc-ps.org/parents/intsafety.
