Pre-Calculus
Prerequisite: "C" or better in MST Algebra 2 and MST Teacher Recommendation
Precalculus is the preparation for calculus and is strongly recommended for all college-bound students, especially those focused on the areas of science, engineer, medicine and business. The study of the topics, concepts, and procedures of Precalculus deepens students’ understanding of algebra and extends their ability to apply algebra concepts and procedures at high conceptual levels, as a tool, and in the study of other subjects. The theory and applications of trigonometry and functions are developed in depth. New mathematical tools, such as vectors and polar coordinates, are introduced, with an eye toward modeling and solving real-world problems. This course includes the study of functions and graphs, with a focus on polynomial, rational, exponential, logistic logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. It also includes the study of analytic geometry (conics), discrete mathematics (probability, statistics and mathematical inductions, and an introduction to) limits. Students will be actively engaged in investigations through lecture and cooperative groups. Technology may include the use of software (Geometer's Sketchpad, Key Curriculum Press), and graphing calculators.
