MARKETING & RETAIL MANAGEMENT

Grades 11, 12                
2 hour block             2.0 credit / year

PREREQUISITE:   Students must be able to work independently, have a citizenship of S or O, and have a teacher recommendation or consent of instructor.

Recommended Courses:  2 years English and Math 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to help students develop basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will prepare them to enter the field of marketing.  It also introduces students to the rewards and risks of owning or operating a business enterprise by operating and managing, “Freddie V’s,” the school store. This course focuses on the retail industry and emphasizes the foundations of business, management, and entrepreneurship; economics; professional development; and communication and interpersonal skills. Included in these foundations are concepts such as distribution, financing, selling, pricing, promotion, marketing-information management, and product/service management.  Skills in communications, English, mathematics, research, critical thinking and psychology are reinforced in this course.  Business ethics and employability skills are an integral part of the course.  Students will gain confidence and the opportunity to achieve marketable skills through this course.  Students will also take part in DECA (the national marketing student organization). 

Externship (co-op) eligible program

COURSE OBJECTIVE:  To prepare students for a career in marketing, as well as equip them with marketable skills and hands-on experience in the Pankow school store.

STUDENT OUTCOME:  Students will be able to demonstrate a variety of basic and advanced level skills applicable to the business and RETAIL INDUSTRY.

CAREER TECHNICAL STUDENT ORGANIZATION:  DECA

CERTIFICATION:  Pankow 1-year CTE Skill Certificate upon successful completion of program.
