EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Course number 909 Grades 11, 12 2 hour block 2.0 credit / year
Prerequisite: A desire to work with young children. Recommended: Child Development and 2 years of English, Math and Science
COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this program, high school students are provided classroom training in the licensed "Teens for Tots" preschool program with approximately 20 preschool children (ages 3 1/2 to 5 years) from the L'Anse Creuse community. Students act as teacher aides writing lesson plans and performing these lessons with the preschool children. Students in the early childhood program learn about careers, guidance & discipline, communication in the workplace, health care of children and workers, safety & first aid / CPR, child abuse, nutrition & food service, classroom maintenance and employability skills.
EXTERNSHIP (co-op) ELIGIBLE PROGRAM COURSE OBJECTIVE: To teach high school students in Early Childhood Education I curriculum and provide hands-on teaching experiences in the licenses "Teens for Tots" preschool lab.
STUDENT OUTCOME: Students will gain hand's-on experience working as teacher aides in the preschool lab setting and acquiring the necessary skills needed to obtain an entry-level job in the child care field.

CERTIFICATION: Pankow's 2-year CTE Skills Certificate upon successful completion of program
