Reading and Writing Websites

Here are some great websites to help students with reading and writing skills.  Some have games and activities for students to peruse, others have tips to use while reading and writing.  Try them all and have fun!

 http://www.coreygreen.com/storytips.html
This site works with character development, conflict, plot, dialogue, setting, and scenes for stories. Story elements are listed as 6th grade benchmarks.  It also gives examples of some of them. The site also contains a “fun stuff” section for games/activities for writing. This is a good site for students that have trouble writing about something they have read (i.e. novel, short story).

From poetry to letter writing, this site helps students understand how to craft a quality piece of writing.

I have used this site with my students when we work on poetry. It’s so incredible to see students start breaking away from literal writing and get figurative. I’ve been amazed at the poems students have been able to write when they start understanding how to use quality figurative language.

http://www.poetryguy.com/kidstips.php
This is an excellent site for kids on writing poetry. It presents ten steps for good poetry writing. It also has a teacher section and some links. If you want to improve on your students’ poetry writing, this is a really valuable site.

This site is run by the American Library Association.  It has  links to search for information on academic subjects, computers and the arts.

http://globalclassroom.org
This site has tons of fun English games.  Topics range from phonics to grammar to story elements.  This is a great site for students to use during school breaks or the summer months to keep their minds engaged in learning.
