The mission: Basketball is statistically one of the most popular and readily accessible sports in the United States. With respect to the school mission statement, this is a sport that can prepare students for a productive adulthood through improvement of physical, emotional, social, and cognitive health. The benefits to health are endless!!!
The skills: In order for a student to choose to do a sport, they will most likely need to have a base knowledge of the skills. The skills we will cover include dribbling, passing, shooting, teamwork, and offensive and defensive strategy.
The skill that will be assessed as a benchmark for performance over their school career is the basketball set shot. Take a moment to look at the rubric below. Parents, if you understand this, you can help too: go outside and shoot some hoops with your son or daughter!!!
(1) The Ready Position (2) Preparation

-Dominant hand behind -Bend the knees
the ball -Look over the ball at
-Supporting hand to the the target
side
-athletic stance square
to the target
(3) Action (4) Follow Through

- Extend the knees - Fingertips toward target
- Extend shooting arm - "Hand in cookie jar"
- Push with finger pads - Backspin
The steps outlined above represent the rubric we use to evaluate your son or daughter’s performance. Each phase represents 1 point out of 4, but the phases are hierarchical (you can’t get the 2 unless you get the 1, you can’t get the 3 unless you get the 1 and 2). So, work from the rubric and make sure you have the beginning down before you move on.
