Meet the Counseling Staff
Mrs. Nancy Shevela, Counseling Office Secretary, joined our staff in August of 2006, and previously worked at MS-N for two years. She has been employed in our school district since May of 1987. Throughout the day her responsibilities consist of the attendance, homework request, record keeping, and students who fall ill.
She and her husband Ron have two sons, two daughters, along with five grandchildren (three granddaughters and two grandsons under age three).
Ms. Diana Conklin earned her Bachelor’s degree at Grand Valley State University and her Master’s in Counseling at Eastern Michigan University. She came to MS-C as a Special Education teacher when the building reopened in 1990. She has three children ranging in age from 8 – 13 who attend schools in the L’Anse Creuse district and who keep her very busy with their sports schedules.
Ms. Catherine McWatt earned her Bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University and her Master’s in Counseling at Oakland University. She also came to MS-C in 1990 as a sixth grade teacher after working at Green, Lobbestael, Middle School-North, and Middle School-South. She and her husband have a daughter, a L’Anse Creuse graduate, who attends Grand Valley State University.
Students are assigned to a counselor based on their last name. Ms. Conklin works with students whose last name begins with A-L. Ms. McWatt works with students whose last name begins with M-Z. Our Mission Statement
The mission of the middle school counselors is to interact with each student so that he/she feels valued and respected. Our goal with the children who enter our office is to listen to them, encourage them, and help them to believe in themselves as they make good choices. Whether our meetings are seldom or frequent, in an individual or group setting, we want to help all our students to have faith in their abilities, to use those abilities to improve their world, and to prepare for their future. While many of the choices they make as middle school students can be corrected later in life if necessary, this is a time to develop good habits and good decision making skills.
