School Wide Honor Cord Policies


Art Honor Cord Policy

Light Green (updated 3.2.05)

 

  • Minimum of 3 Art Credits (a total of 6 classes)
  • GPA: 3.33
  • No grade lower than a B- in any art class.
  • Classes: Any art class offered here at North (Painting, Drawing, Design, Fashion Design, Comic Illustration, Jewelry, Pottery/Jewelry/Sculpture, & 1 yr. of Visual Imaging Technology.)

Band Honor Cord Policy

Dark Green

 

·        Active in Band program for 4 yrs.

·        No Credit Review or heavy absence record

·        GPA: 3.2

·        In “good standing” in the instrumental music program

·        See Mr. Miles with any questions

 

Business Honor Cord Policy

Royal Blue

 

  • Minimum of 2 cr. earned in business classes
    • Computer classes may be counted as part of the 2 cr.
    • Credit earned for COOP job experience will NOT count as part of the 2 cr.
  • GPA: 3.3 (in business classes at North)
    • No grade lower than a B- in any business class
    • Must earn a letter grade in each business class, not just credit (CR)
    • You may not have any NC (no credits) for any business class
  • Students must make a formal application for their honor cords
  • The Business Ed. Dept will review each applicant’s transcript.

Community Service Honor Cord Policy

Green/White

 

·      Senior must complete 80+ hrs of Community Service

 

English Honor Cord Policy

          White (updated 5.9.05)

 

·        Minimum of 4 cr. (8 English classes), Classes do NOT have to be over a 4-yr time span

·        All English Classes will count, but the 7th class must be completed by the end of the 1st semester senior year. You must be enrolled in the 8th class the last semester of your senior year.

·        Ineligible if you earned a NC (no credit) or a C in 1 or more of the 8 classes

·        Your GPA in these classes must be at least a 3.5 (per each high school) through 1st semester senior year.

·      Must make a formal application for your honor cord

 

Math Honor Cord Policy

Lavender

 

¨      Honor cords will be awarded to graduating seniors who have completed four years of high school mathematics in the college-prep mathematics program (Algebra 1, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus and/or Calculus) with a GPA of 3.3 or above.

 

¨      Only courses taught and taken at the high school freshmen year and beyond will be included in the calculation of the GPA regardless of where you enter the sequence. As a result, some students will end with Pre-Calculus and others with Calculus.

 

¨      Other classes that are taken during the course of the four years that are not listed above will NOT be included in the GPA.

 

¨      If a senior is currently enrolled in Pre-Calculus or Calculus, the grade earned in that class as of the selection date will be used in the computation of the 3.3 GPA.

 

¨      A student is not eligible for an honor cord if any classes throughout the sequence were completed on a credit/no credit basis.

 

¨      When calculating the GPA no rounding will be done.  For example, a student who has a GPA of 3.27 will not be honored.

 

MME Honor Cord Policy

White and Purple

 

Student must have received an endorsement from the State of Michigan with a score of 1 or 2 in all subject areas.  

 

Mu Alpha Theta Honor Cord Policy

Lavender and Gold

 

The criteria for membership in Mu Alpha Theta is:

 

1.   Previously or currently enrolled in Pre-Calculus or AP Calculus.

 

2.   Maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA in all mathematics courses taken at LCN.

 

All seniors who participate in Mu Alpha Theta will be considered for an honor cord.  In addition to the initial criteria, in order to receive an honor cord, it is expected that students:

 

3.    Attend ALL scheduled Mu Alpha Theta meetings.

 

4.   Participate in “Pi Week.”

 

5.    Provide after school tutoring for Math Help Days.

 

6.    Be a member of MAT for a minimum of 2 years.

 

 

Students are not required to take mathematics their senior year to participate in Mu Alpha Theta, as long as they completed a full year of Pre-Calc their junior year. They will not be eligible for an honor cord based on criteria #6.

 

If a student drops Pre-Calc after 1st semester, their membership in Mu Alpha Theta is terminated.

 

National Honor Society (NHS)

Honor Cord Policy

Black and Gold

 

·        Students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of leadership, service, character and scholarship

 

·        1 year attendance at L’ANSE CREUSE High School- NORTH

 

·        Upperclassmen with a GPA: 3.3 or better

 

·        11th grade students must have 24 letter grades on their transcripts, while 12th graders must have 35 letter grades.

 

·        Transfer students may not have had the opportunity to take 6 classes per semester. They will be considered on an individual basis with regard to academic eligibility.

 

·        Completion of a Student Activities information Form and recommendations from teachers in whose classes the student was/is enrolled during the previous or current school year.

 

·        Recommendation from sponsors of 2 extracurricular activities in which they have actively participated during the previous or current school year. At least 1 of these extracurricular activities must be school related. The 2nd one may come from either school or community activities.

 

·      Must be an NHS member in good standing and have completed NHS participation hours.

 

Quill and Scroll Honor Cord Policy

Royal Blue and Gold

 

·        Outstanding work in journalism

·        Top 1/3 of graduating class

·        Nomination by advisor

·        Approved by Quill and Scroll executive board.

 

Senior Honors Project: Honor Cord Policy

Light Blue

 

·        Successful completion of Honors Project.

 

Science Honor Cord Policy

Burgundy (updated 3.2.05)

 

·        GPA: 3.3 in 7.5 semester of science

·        Earned credit in 4 yrs. of science

·        Must have taken 3.5 credits and be in enrolled in the 8th semester.

·        Of the 4 years of Science, 2 of the following classes must have been taken:

1.       CP Chemistry

2.     AP Chemistry

3.     Honors Chemistry

4.     CP Physics

5.     Anatomy & Physiology

 

Social Studies Honor Cord Policy

Navy Blue

 

·        Minimum of 4 social studies credits (8 classes)

·        3.5 (7 classes) of the 4 credits must be completed by the end of the 1st semester (January) of your senior year.

·        GPA: 3.3 in the social studies completed. It will be calculated at the end of the 1st semester of your senior year, as well as your grade at the time of application in any current social studies class.

Student Council Honor Cord Policy

Royal Blue/Silver

 

·        Student must be in good standing with student council.

 

·        Students must have at least two (2) years of service on student council.

 

·        Seniors with only one (1) year of service on student council may receive an honor cord, if they have demonstrated outstanding service.

 

·        The activity director and the advisors of student council will do an evaluation for the senior with one (1) year service.

 

·        Seniors who are not on student council their year, but who have served at least two (2) years during their high school career and who were in good standing will also receive an honor cord.

 

Technology Education Honor Cord Policy

Navy Blue and Silver

 

·        GPA: 3.3 in technology courses

·        You may not have received a B- or lower in any technology classes.

·        You must have earned a letter grade (no just CR)

·        Earned at least 3 credits

·        Shown leadership and understanding in the particular field of study

·        All transcripts will be reviewed and verified by the technology department staff.

·        No credit reviews due to absences or tardies

·        Technology Classes:

o       Modular Technology, Drafting, Video, or Photography

 

Vocal Music Honor Cord Policy

Pink

 

·        GPA: 3.3

·        4 years consecutive years in choir or music theory, transfer students or a student who has left band to join choir those years in the other ensemble may be counted.

·        If a student takes more than one choir class a year only one will be counted, so students must be in the program from 9th grade through 12th grade.

·        Students must maintain a B average in choir classes.

·        One full year of music theory class may count as a year of choir.

 

 World Language Honor Cord Policy

  Red

 

·        GPA: 3.3 in the Foreign Language studied

·        Student has completed 7 semesters of Foreign Language study in the SAME Language **

·        Unless an application for early graduation has been approved, the student has continued to the 8th semester of study.

·        Student is not currently on credit review due to unexcused absences or tardies

 

** Exceptions will be made for students who have been promoted by their language teachers to skip a year of study due to exceptional performance in the lower levels.
