Champions are a model of consistency
• LCN boys set cruise control, roll to county championship.
By Jason Schmitt Macomb Daily Sports Editor
L’Anse Creuse North’s boys bowling team was the model of consistency at the Macomb County Championships Saturday at Sunnybrook Golf and Bowl. And it was that consistency that proved to be too much for the competition to handle. The Crusaders knocked off Ford 600-565 in the championship final to capture the school’s first-ever boys county championship. L’Anse Creuse North posted scores ranging from 600 to 656 in its four tournament matches. The Crusaders were the second seed out of qualifying play. We didn’t change our lineup. We stayed with the same lineup the whole time, LCN coach Bob Y said. They couldn’t do anything wrong. They just made spares. I preach spares, spares, spares. We practice 20 to 24 baker games every practice. Baker games are where you win it. You come down to the finals and this is what it is. And this is why we succeeded. Ford, which finished runnerup to Sterling Heights last year, had bowled well in its three matches leading up to the finals. The fifth-seeded Falcons beat South Lake 614-527 in the round of 16, then knocked off Sterling Heights 633-530 in the quarterfinals. They then bumped off topseeded De La Salle 690-630 in the semifinals. That score is believed to be a state record and perhaps a national record as well. L’Anse Creuse North topped Romeo to start the tournament, 607-445. It then beat Warren Woods-Tower 650-610 and Cousino 656-568 to reach the final. Coming into the tournament LCN had lost three-straight dual matches, all by the score of 16-14. It was just a matter of time, Ybarra said. I told them that if they work hard enough in practice, sooner or later their luck is going to change. The Crusaders’ starting five of Kolten Z, Tim E, Tim B, Travis B and Matt B all average at least 193 in MAC Red play, where the team is currently tied for fourth place in the division. Coach Bob said the entire team played well, but Travis B stepped it up big time. He struggled a bit yesterday, Coach Bob said. I had to pull him out of the match. He got mad at me but I told him, ‘tomorrow’s another day.’ He struggled a bit early on in qualifying, but I got him back in the baker games and I never had to pull him out. I don’t think he missed a strike after we qualified. He was solid all the way through.

L’Anse Creuse North Junior Captures Girls’ County Title
Jason Schmitt Macomb Daily Sports Editor
Who ever knew bowling could be so educational? L’Anse Creuse North’s Sarah R used some words of wisdom from author Dean Hinitz capture the singles championship at the Macomb County Tournament Saturday at Sunnybrook Golf and Bowl in Sterling Heights. The junior battled back from a mediocre start, firing a 298 in her last game to overtake the field of 120 bowlers. I just got done reading (Hinitz’s) ‘Focused for Bowling,’ Sarah R. said. I got to chapter three or four and it really helped me start to focus. I really keep my concentration out there now. Her 631 series was 14 pins better than runner-up Rebecca W. of Richmond (617). Things didn’t start out all that well for the Sarah R, who had a 333 through two games. I thought I had a chance, but I was thinking ‘a 167 average, what can I do? the junior said. So I made a ball switch. I was using my Angular and I switched to my Black Widow. My coach was saying you have to trust your ball and play up the middle more and I just went with it. After the first strike I was just like ‘I can do this. She rattled off 11-straight before leaving the 4-8 to finish with her 298. It was a career best, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. I thought I was going to be in the top 10, but I had no idea I had won, she said. I was so excited. Stevenson junior Amanda N. finished third with a 610. Also topping 600 was Sarah's teammate, sophomore Heather K, finished fourth overall with a 603.
