Broadcast & Media Club Debuts at L’Anse Creuse High School
About a dozen students have taken advantage of the new L'Anse Creuse High School Broadcast & Media Club, which is designed to give students a unique broadcasting experience learning how to work in a "live" television production environment. The club's productions are centered on the new gymnasium, which features connections for video and audio feeds that are sent back to the school's television production studio.
"The club provides opportunities for students to learn production skills that are very unique to a high school television production program," according to Steve Miller, club advisor, who also teaches technology and video courses at the high school. "Students not only learn about the technical aspects of live television event coverage, they also learn the importance of working as a team.
The club celebrated several firsts. On Oct. 26, club members produced a three-camera videocast of a Performing Arts Assembly throughout the building, while recording it to DVD for later viewing. On Nov. 13, the club participated in a live, in-house production of the MHSAA volleyball quarterfinal match. The match was a first for any L'Anse Creuse Public Schools. "As far as I know, we are the first high school in Michigan to regularly produce full-scale, in-house television production events," said Miller. "We have received many compliments, and the students continue to learn new skills and incorporate them into their productions. Fans enjoy seeing the live broadcast while visiting the concession stand or relaxing in our new commons area. Our new facility is truly a multi-purpose room, offering many more opportunities than just hosting sporting events." The club is looking forward to utilizing the 16' screen and accompanying projector, which should be installed in the gym in January.
