THE SECOND GRADE SCOOP
Reading
Our reading clubs will meet three days this week due to our abbreviated schedule. I am noticing an improvement in fluency and comprehension skills so we will continue to strengthen those as we add questions that require higher level thinking skills. The children will continue to read independently during the day and I will start a new program called the Daily Five this week. We will add one component each week so the children can become successfully acclimated.
Writer’s Workshop
We will be working on our prized possession writing pieces as we ran ran out of time last week. We will also be discussing leads and revisiting previously written pieces to improve the first sentence. The children will have a chance to work on some writing of their own choice as there seems to be a lot of exciting things happening in their lives. It is always the most popular time.
Math
The children will be working on solving money problems with two digits addends. We will also be working on estimating costs to anticipate if there they have enough money to purchase items. We will continue to work on a variety of skills in our daily math boxes. The children are more independent and confident when they tackle them. We will be doing activities on Wednesday that require the children to tile objects and measure with a tape measure. They will also be shopping with a partner.
Extra! Extra!
There will be a display of snowman sweatshirts in the hall during conferences. It has been a Higgins tradition that the second grades each make their own. The cost of the sweatshirt and the materials is $10. We will be making them the first week in January but the sweatshirts need to be ordered so please stop by and mark down the size your child will need. We will be asking for helpers that day as each class is down there at different times. The snowmen are adorable and each has its own personality.
