HAWK WALK- 2012

Helping make Higgins a Evergreen Certified School!!!
Teaching has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl. I come from a family of educators and was taught at an early age about the importance of a strong education. I believe in passing that foundation onto my students so they can and will be successful students and leaders.

Above are my dad, Jack and his twin brother Bill. Both were teachers. Also, is my mom, Bette. She was a professor. Both my parents taught for over 30 years!
I graduated from L'Anse Creuse HS-North and continued on to Michigan State University with a degree in Elementary Education. In 2006, I earned my Masters in Educational Leadership from Saginaw Valley State University. In 2011, I finished my Specialist Degree in Central Office and did my Internship with Sandra Standel, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel.
I grew up on a beautiful horse farm in Clinton Township and we still own the farm. My family enjoys all the animals that we raise, especially the mini horses!

I enjoy learning about different cultures and gaining new experiences. I have been traveling to different countries since the age of 12. My active lifestyle has taken me to Denmark, London, Sweden, Zimbabwe, South Africa, the Yucatan and Cozumel.

Visiting Alejandra over the summer to teach English to her students
My students in Mexico
Alejandra and I in her classroom.
Another passion of mine is helping children who are less fortunate in developing countries. These are some of the things that my classroom has done, along with the support of the community:
-
2009, I visited Vallidolid to teach English for the summer in all subject areas.
-
In the year 2006 -2007 my class hosted a exchange Teacher from Vallidolid, Mexico.
-
2006-2007: Students in my class donated books and coloring books for the children in Mexico. We collected over 100 books and with the help of the PTC, was able to ship them down to the children in time for Christmas!
-
2005-2006: We adopted a Mexican school and raised funds to replace their school after the hurricane. We raised over $2,000 to fix the school.
I also established a school garden in 2001 with the help of local Master Gardeners. We have won over $7,000 in grant money to help support all of the gardens as well as educational resources for the students. The students meet afterschool and together we have grown 5 differant types of gardens!
I I welcome the opportunity to meet the parents who are involved in their child's education. I have the "Open Door" policy and encourage active involvement.
Sincerely,
Katie Hoffner
