Thank you for visiting my website. I decided to enter the teaching profession while in the seventh grade after my youngest brother was diagnosed as having autism. Autism was such an unknown handicap in 1959, there were few programs or teachers to help my brother. I realized then I wanted to teach handicapped students to reach for their potential. Go to www.bittersweetfarms.org to learn more about a group home to maximize opportunities for individual development of persons with autism and support to families. I received my Bachelor of Science and Master of Education Degree from Bowling Green State University. I am also a remedial reading specialist. In 1989/90 I was honored by being Michigan's Teacher of the Year and received the Milken Award in 1990.
After over 40 years of teaching I have never regretted my decision to become a teacher, and especially a special education teacher. There is no feeling equal to the one I experience as I see my students reach new heights and gain the confidence to achieve even more. It is an exciting, exhilarating experience.
My husband, Alan, and I have two sons. Alan is an attorney here is Michigan. Travis, my oldest son, graduated from the University of Michigan and received his Masters in engineering from University of Michigan also. Travis is working on a dual Executive MBA from both U.C. Berkley in California and Columbia University in New York. Trevor graduated from The University of Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 2009. He is presently an attorney and working for the Cravath Law Firm in New York City. I can be reached at Higgins: 493-5210
