Information on the Daily 5
My classroom includes the use of the "Daily 5," based on the book "the Daily 5: Fostering Literacy Independence in the Elementary Grades" by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. The "Daily 5" includes the following activities: -Read to self -Read to someone -Listen to reading -Work on writing -Word work
Read to self: Students learn about three ways to read a book: read and think about the pictures, read the words, and retell a previously read book (using the retelling hand).
Read to someone: Students will be able to read with a friend, increasing decoding, comprehension, and fluency. They will sit "EEKK" (elbow to elbow, and knee to knee), while they read pages together, or take turns reading to each other.
Listen to reading: Students will listen to stories being read to them. The following websites will be used as resources, and may also be used while at home. http://www.storylineonline.net/ http://www.starfall.com http://kids.nypl.org/ (click on "tumblebooks")
Work on writing: Students are able to write about anything during this time. Students may write a story, make a list, write a poem, write an informational piece, or anything else that involves writing.
Word work: Students are able to use a variety of materials to practice their personal spelling words. Some examples are: white boards, magnetic letters, wikki stix, play dough, stamps, stencils, colored pencils, and letter tiles. It would be helpful for your child to practice their personal spelling words at home as well. http://www.spellingcity.com is a FANTASTIC and really fun site where students are able to practice their words!
