Newsletter for the Week of 3/15

It was great seeing everyone at conferences!  I know that the children were very excited to show off the learning that they have done so far this week.  We still have a lot more learning to do in the last marking period!

WISHLIST: TISSUES

Reading

Did you know that March is “Reading Month?”  The “Reading Month” committee has planned many wonderful activities focusing on a “reading is souper” theme!  We are looking forward to Michigan author Kelly DiPucchio’s visit on Monday, March 29th.  We are reading many books by Dr. Seuss for read aloud this week.  We are focusing on determining importance while we read.  Author study of the month of February: Dr. Seuss.

Writing

Both 1st and 2nd grade students will be learning more about writing to a prompt.  This includes: thinking about the prompt, making a plan, and using a title, a lead, interesting details including the theme word, and a strong ending.  This also includes making sure that word wall words are spelled correctly, and the correct use of capitalization and punctuation.  It would be helpful for your child to keep a journal of writing at home.

Math

1st graders will finish Unit 8: Mental Arithmetic, Money, and Fractions this week.  A review will come home on Wednesday (3/18), with the test being on Thursday (3/19).  The 1st grade test will cover the following skills:

·         Use $ and ¢ symbols

·         Show amounts of money in two different ways

2nd graders will finish Unit 9: Measurement.  A review will come home today and the test will be Tuesday.  The 2nd grade test will cover the following skills:

·         Read/write money using decimals

·         Read, create and interpret bar graphs

·         Read, create and interpret pictographs where pictures stand for two or three objects or people

Please help your child to prepare for their test!  J  New math homelinks will come home on Friday for 1st graders, and on Wednesday for 2nd graders.

Theme
First graders will learn about families and schools.  Second graders will continue to learn more about communities.

UPCOMING EVENTS & REMINDERS

Mondays are Bagel Day (bagels will cost $0.75 and cream cheese will cost $0.25)!  The choices will be: plain, salt, cheese, and special of the week.
