Chesterfield Elementary > Staff Web Pages A-F > V. Elias > Reading Strategies

Students will be using the comprehension strategies listed below throughout the school year.  These strategies will help improve students' comprehension skills.

Making Connections:

  • Text-to-Self Readers make connections between the text and their own experiences or prior knowledge.
  • Text-to-Text Readers make connections between the current text and another text.
  • Text-to-World Readers make connections between the text and the world around them.

Questioning:  Readers are encouraged to ask questions before, during, and after reading.  (Not all questions will be answered)

Visualizing: Readers create mental images of what they are reading.

Inferring: Readers combine what is read with prior knowledge and draw a conclusion.

Determining Importance: Readers know the main ideas/parts of the text.

Synthesizing: The reader brings together information from the text and from personal, world, and literary knowledge to create new understanding.
