5th Grade Curriculum
· SCIENCE: We will cover physical science topics (matter, electricity & magnets) and earth science topics (weather and space). Some projects the students will do in science are: circuit connections, planet newsletter, moon and weather calendars and various experiments.
· SOCIAL STUDIES: We will learn about the Core Democratic Values, economics, geography, civics, early explorers, the original 13 colonies and the American Revolution.
· MATH: The students will have study links to work on at home almost every night. Before we start a new unit, I will send home a parent note detailing what will be taught. Your child will have a math folder that is kept in school. As the study links are completed, graded and returned, we will keep the study links in this folder until it is time for the end-of-the-unit test. Before the test, we will attach all of the study links to a study guide and send them home. Your child can then refer back to their completed assignments as an additional way to prepare for the test.
· READING: Students will take part in a balanced literacy program. They will work in groups of 7-10 students and learn strategies to become better readers. They will learn new vocabulary and have a variety of tasks to supplement each new book they read.
· SPELLING: We are currently using the Month-by-Month Phonics program. The students will learn how to spell, not what to spell. Therefore, there is no weekly list of words to “memorize.”
· WRITING: The students will write across the curriculum. They will write narrative stories, extended responses, constructed responses, journals, reading logs, poetry, letters, etc. Students will be communicating orally and visually in addition to written communication. Emphasis will be put on good listening and speaking skills.
