I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Texas at El Paso. I taught fourth and sixth grade in the El Paso School District for nine years before moving to Houston, Texas. There I taught for two years before my husband decided to move back to his home state of Michigan. I have taught at Chesterfield Elementary for twelve years and received my Masters Degree in reading  from Oakland University. I have two children. My daughter Michelle lives in Chicago and is Director of Development for Marillac Center. My son Brian is Project Manager for Summit Health in Southfield. My interests include golfing, scrapbooking, dancing and attending many sporting events.

Beginning of School-Year Letter

Dear Parents/Guardians:

            Welcome to a new school year!  I am excited and pleased to have your child in my class.  I am looking forward to a successful year.  As part of our communication with you, your child will have a folder that they will bring home every other Friday.  Please review the assignments, check for notes and special announcements, sign the folder and return on Monday morning.  Open communication is very important to ensure success for your child.  We will try to include a newsletter to keep you up to date on the progress in our classrooms.

Absences

            If your child is absent, we will have a buddy student record any assignments or projects that we completed for the day.  This will be on your child’s desk when they return.  It is their responsibility to complete the work and turn it in as soon as possible.  Generally, if they are absent one day, they have one day to complete the work.

Grading

            Your child will be graded on participation, journals, homework, written tests and class projects.  A report card is sent home in November, January and June.  Grades for science and social studies are according to the chart outlined below:

100% - 90% = A

89% - 80% = B

79% - 70% = C

69% - 60% = D

59% and below = E

S = Secure

P= Progressing

B= Beginning

            In math, your child will receive an “S” for secure, “P” for progressing and a “B” for beginning.  If they receive an “S”, they have mastered the concept and are secure in that particular area.  If they receive a “P”, they are still working on the concept and are progressing in their learning.  If they receive a “B”, they are just beginning to understand and need support both at home and in school.

Student of the Week

            We choose a different student of the week on Fridays.  If your child is chosen, please assure that they complete the student of the week information.  They can use photographs or drawings to represent themselves.  They need to have this in by the following Monday.  Their board will be up all week.  They are also in charge of the estimation jar.

Room Mother/Father

            We will need a volunteer parent to make calls, plan parties, etc.  If you are willing to be our room parent, please let me know as soon as possible.  If you wish to volunteer but are unable to attend our open house and did not sign the volunteer form, please send in a note with your child.

Book Orders

            Periodically, we will send home book order forms.  This is a wonderful opportunity to buy books for low prices.  Your child will have time to read each day and they must have a book to read.  We will accept cash or a check payable to the book company you are ordering from.  A check is preferable.

Party Money

            We will have classroom seasonal activities.  This gets quite costly.  Therefore, we would appreciate it if each child could bring in $5.00 to help with the purchase of food, juice, plates, napkins, etc.  Your child can bring the money in at any time now or until the end of September.

Birthdays

            Birthday treats are welcome if your child desires.  All that we ask is that you provide the necessary paper products and treats for 35 students.  If your child’s birthday is in the summer, they may pick a day near their “half” birthday to bring in treats.

Discipline Plan

            We have instituted a discipline plan in our classrooms that supports our school plan.  If your child has broken a rule, they will receive a warning.  If the inappropriate behavior continues, they will receive a caution card.  This must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned the next day.  Good behavior and responsibility is a must in order to enjoy the fourth grade activities.

Snack

            We will have a 10-minute snack break each day.  If possible, please send an extra snack with your child’s lunch.  THIS IS TO BE A NUTRITIOUS SNACK ONLY - NO CHIPS, CHOCOLATE, CANDY, ETC.

Assignment Book

            Your child will have an assignment book.  This is THEIR responsibility.  Every morning they will write the day’s lessons for each subject.  As the students complete their work, they will check off it finished.  If they do not finish their work in class, it becomes homework.  They will list their assignments, take it home and have it signed every night.  PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR CHILD BRINGS THE ASSIGNMENT BOOK BACK TO CLASS EACH MORNING.  THEY WILL LOSE MAD DOLLARS IF THEY DON’T HAVE THEIR ASSIGNMENT BOOK OR IF IT IS NOT SIGNED.  AFTER THREE WARNINGS, I WILL BE CONTACTING YOU.  IF THE PLANNER IS LOST, THE COST IS $5.95.

Homework

            Your child will be assigned homework and at-home projects throughout the year.  HOMEWORK IS DUE THE FOLLOWING MORNING (unless otherwise stated).  IF YOUR CHILD FORGETS OR DOES NOT COMPLETE THEIR HOMEWORK, THEY WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR THAT ASSIGNMENT.  MISSING ASSIGNMENTS CAN LOWER A GRADE QUICKLY.  We have had experiences in the past when parents call or come in to discuss if a child can turn work in late.  PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT IF YOUR CHILD’S HOMEWORK IS NOT TURNED IN ON TIME, THEY STILL MUST DO IT AND TURN IT IN, THEY WILL LOSE MAD DOLLARS AND THEY WILL RECEIVE A ZERO.  IF YOUR CHILD CONTINUES TO BE IRRESPONSIBLE, THEY WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR FOURTH GRADE ACTIVITIES.

Specials

            Students will attend art, music, physical education, computers, library and Spanish.  They will need tennis shoes for gym and need to return checked-out books on library day.

            We look forward to a successful school year.  If at any time you would like to speak with me, please call 586.493.5240 and leave a message.  I am available before and after school to schedule a conference.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Mirzoian
