The third grade is a child centered, interactive, cooperative classroom. Responsibility, independence and organization will be stressed. We will work together as a team to produce a positive and productive learning environment. Throughout the year, as your child continues to grow, remember to value the process that he or she goes through to obtain the final product.

Welcome to the Third Grade learning community at Carkenord Elementary! My name is Kristy Korte, and this is my  8th year in L’Anse Creuse Schools. I earned my Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Elementary Education with minors in both Biological Science and English from Michigan State University in 2001. I received my Master’s Degree in Teaching Reading from Saginaw Valley University in 2004. I acquired my Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Oakland University in 2007. Currently, I am working to complete my   Ph.D at  Oakland University. I look forward to meeting you as Mrs. Brender and I work together to make your child’s transition into Third Grade as successful and comfortable as possible.

I will be  teaching the morning session of class while Mrs. Brender will be teaching the afternoon session.

Remember, the school day is long and busy. Please make sure that your child is well-rested. We will pause each morning for a snack. Each child should bring his or her snack each day. Send only simple, nutritional snacks such as apple slices, crackers, vegetables, cheese, or dry cereal. Look over the following information in this pamphlet, as we begin this exciting year together.

All schoolwork is started and expected to be completed in school.  If a child does not finish at school, I will place a sticker on the assignment that says HOMEWORK.  It is to be completed and returned to school the next day.  Schoolwork will be returned with comments, a stamp, a check, and/or a star on it.  It will be sent home upon completion, in your child’s Daily Folder, so you can review your child’s schoolwork with him/her on a daily basis.

For homework, students are to read and write at home on a daily basis.  A variety of reading and writing homework hints will be provided in the newsletter I send home every other week.  In addition, daily math homework will begin several weeks into the school year.  It will be sent home four to five times each week.  Math homework is Home Links.  It is expected that homework be completed, signed by a parent, and returned to school the next day.  I will return all homework to students with comments, a stamp, a check, and/or a star on it.

Beginning in October, please check your child's constructive response folder on Fridays. During the week, students receive two essay questions to complete in school. Students will bring this folder home each Friday. Students may finish incomplete essays and share finished products with family members and then bring the folder back to school on Monday.

Take-Home

Folders

Your child will bring a folder home each day containing any pertinent work or notes that should be seen promptly. This folder is to be returned each school day! A biweekly newsletter to inform you of community events, needed supplies, and announcements will be sent home.
