Carkenord Elementary School to participate in AT&T/MACUL Student Technology Showcase at State Capitol
Joseph M. Carkenord Elementary School is among nearly 50 schools in Michigan that will participate in the fourth annual AT&T/MACUL Student Technology Showcase on Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 9:30 a.m-3 p.m. on the first floor of the State Capitol Building in Lansing.
Two separate groups of students, one from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and the other from 1-3 p.m., will use computers and other electronic devices to show elected members of the Michigan Senate and the House of Representatives how technology is being used in the classroom to facilitate learning. The projects will cover a wide variety of areas including distance learning, computer programming, curriculum integration, electronic portfolios, and cooperative learning. Other areas include video production, web authoring, hand-held technologies, robotics, digital imaging, multimedia and computer-assisted design.
Taking part in the demonstrations locally are fifth-graders from Sarah Rybarczyk’s class, Nicole Chianese, Brandon Vaillancourt, Joshua Veilleux and Sarah White, along with media specialist, Liz Allen. As part of a collaborative library instruction project, students used the Big6 research process to author their own website. Once familiar with the steps of the research process, students chose a topic of interest and began their research. Upon completion of their research, students used a storyboard to map the layout of their website. Then, using their research gathered from the Big6 process, students developed and published their own websites.
The Showcase is sponsored by AT&T and the Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL), an organization dedicated to bringing educators from all levels together to share their knowledge and concerns regarding educational uses of computers and technology. For further information about the event, visit the MACUL Web site at www.macul.org or contact Liz Allen at (586) 493–5230 x 1030.
