“Graduation felt like a long way off until I enrolled at Riverside Academy. The staff made me feel at home, and they taught me how to commit myself to achieve my goals.”

Curriculum

Students attending Riverside take courses that are approved by the Board of Education, leading to a L'Anse Creuse diploma.  New high school course expectations, as outlined by the State of Michigan, have been integrated into Riverside's course offerings.  These courses, taught using alternative teaching methods and strategies to prepare students for post-secondary training and the real world of work.  In addition, to ensure students can get through the rigorous work, a framework of support initiatives have been implemented to guide the students towards success.

Riverside offers content-driven courses using the small school philosophy.  Students have access to a wide variety of courses including: Literature, Composition, Poetry, Bridges to Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II,  Applied Math, Biology, Conceptual Physics, Environmental Science, Forensic Science, U.S. History and Geography, Economics, World History and Geography, Civics, Michigan Merit Exam Preparation Course, Sales and Marketing, Discovery, Life Skills, Publications, Art, Commerical Art, Ceramics/Pottery, Studio Art, Health, Physical Education, Nutrition, Parenting, Self-Defense and Stretch, Computers, Business Prep., and others offered in a self-paced instructional model.

Riverside has articulated up to 5 college credits with Macomb Commuity College.  This means that students who meet the academic criteria set forth by the college will begin their MCC experience with 5 earned credits, which also apply to their high school graduation requirements.  Many students have successfully met this criteria.

“I love my Group & Guidance class! Most of us are in the same classes and we support each other throughout the day.”
Riverside student: Theresa B.
