The Music Room

This page is set up for links to fun and frequently asked questions.  Looking for an answer? Then try looking here first.

How old should my child be to start taking piano lessons?

I normally suggest first grade.  By this age, most students’ hands are big enough to cover the piano keys.  It depends on the size of the child’s hands and fingers.  It also depends on the interest of commitment.  A child needs to understand that any type of lessons, require a daily commitment to practice.

How old should my child be to start voice lessons?

During the elementary age, I recommend lots of singing for fun anywhere they can get it.  They can sing in the shower, with the family, at church, with friends, karaoke games, school and every other possible scenario.  The voice changes as the body matures so voice lessons are not usually recommended until at least middle school.  Even at that age, I would suggest talking to the choir teacher so he or she can give you an honest answer based on the talent, and maturation of the individual child.
