Home PC Maintenance
You have probably heard these terms; service pack, hotfix, patch; this article will help you understand what they mean.
Software is a computer program that gives the computer instructions in order to work. There is OS (operating system) software, such as Windows® (controls the mechanics of the machine) and application software, such as Word or Excel.
Software often contains errors or bugs that are found after the software has been marketed. Once found, a patch (sometimes called a hotfix) is written and released to correct the problem. Patches are written for specific problems and may not always be tested in all scenarios. Because of this limited testing, it is recommended that you apply patches only if you are having a specific problem. The manufacturer/vendor website will give you information about patches so you can determine according to the problem you are having if applying one is necessary.
Service Packs are multiple patches distributed as one. They are available from the manufacturer’s website or are orderable from the manufacturer/vendor. Service packs are typically distributed once or twice a year; this makes it easier than installing patches individually. Patches should be installed in order, if you skip patches you may be missing out on some important updates or product enhancements, in a service pack the patches are applied in a consecutive order.
