MP3 Players: Not Just for Music
MP3 players, or digital audio players are devices that store digital music and sound/audio files. The device was first introduced in 1998 and stored only 32MB of audio, or approximately 6-8 hours. They now have much larger storage capacities.
When you think of MP3 players you probably think of music, but you can also use them for Audio Books and Podcasting. Before you purchase a player, research your options and see what they come with. A wall mount charger is good to have. The device will charge when connected to your computer but you will at some time need to charge it away from the computer, you may also want a case or a clip, different headphones or external speakers. You can review players at this site: http://reviews.cnet.com/Music/2001-6450_7-0.html?tag=ont.mp3
Audio books can be purchased and downloaded to an MP3 player. One web site to check out is www.audible.com, you can purchase as you go or sign up for a plan, the books vary in price and there are some free options as well. Before you purchase any book you can read the reviews and listen to a sampling of the book. Again, review the site you choose for device compatibility.
Podcasting is similar to blogging but it is done in audio. It is an audio broadcast that has been converted to MP3 or similar format. You subscribe like you would a magazine and updates can be automatically detected and ready to download. Podcasts could be described as self-made radio talk shows; the podcaster (broadcaster) chooses a topic of interest and it is discussed and responded to like a weblog. You can search for Podcast Directories or checkout http://www.podcast.net/.
You can now enjoy your favorite music, books or discussions anywhere.
