Monitoring Techniques
Web Safety
- Teach children to close the browser, use the back button or home button if they have accessed a website they are uncomfortable with.
- Remind children to never give out personal information just as they would not give their address to a stranger on the street. Pedophiles can be very persuasive in gaining your child's trust.
- Choose "good" sites and add them to the "Favorites" folder or use the bookmarking feature in your web browser. Allow young children to view these sites only.
- The "History" feature is like a record keeper of your activities on the web. Viewing the "History" folder may vary with every web browser. They may be a "History" button or you may locate the "History" through one of the menu options. This tool can be customized and is an excellent means of viewing where your child has been.
- Most web browsers have a "Content Advisor," which allows you to control the websites your computer has access to. Use the "Help" menu in your web browser to guide you through these settings.
- Set limits appropriate for your child's age.
- Allow Internet usage only when a parent/guardian is present.
