Graduation Requirements

• L’Anse Creuse High Schools are four-year schools.
• Each year is divided into two semesters.
• Students enroll for seven hours of classes each semester.
• Each class hour per semester completed successfully equals 0.5 credit.
• A student earns 3.5 credits per semester and seven credits per school year.
• Students must have a minimum of 23 credits for graduation.
• One credit of mathematics must be taken during student's final year of high school per Michigan law.
• Students are required to complete four years of attendance in order to graduate.
• Students must complete 40 hours of Community Service Learning before May 1 of their senior year.
• All students must take all sections of the Michigan Merit Exam in order to graduate.

Student Responsibility for Graduation Requirements

As you plan your high school program, you should recognize that the courses you take will have a major effect on the college and career choices that will be open to you following graduation. If you plan to attend college, your chance for admission to, and success in, particular programs will improve if you have a strong educational background. During your high school years, you will most likely try a variety of subject areas. This is good and should be encouraged because it is important to use your time in high school to explore the full range of course options that are available. In doing so, you will learn a great deal about your abilities and preferences.

Because courses in certain areas are related to each other and increase in complexity from year to year, the courses you take in ninth grade will have a significant impact on the courses that you will take in subsequent years, perhaps even including college. It is extremely important that you think carefully about the courses you select as you begin high school. At times, it may be tempting to avoid some of the "hard" courses, but you will find it easier to push yourself now rather than make up deficiencies later.

Math Related Courses

All students are required to take four credits of mathematics for graduation.  The State of Michigan requires Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 as three of the four credits.  Students have the option of taking Algebra 2 over two years to count for two credits.  Students also have the option of taking a “math-related” course as their fourth mathematics credit.  Many of the courses we offer at the Pankow Center count as a math-related credit.  Other courses at LCHS and LCHS-N also count as math-related even if they are not in the Mathematics Department.  As you select classes, look for this symbol: M  Every course designated with this symbol counts as the fourth math credit needed for graduation.
