Dual Enrollment

In addition to classes offered in the L’Anse Creuse Schools, under certain circumstances students may enroll in courses at local colleges, a procedure known as “dual enrollment.” The State School Act contains a provision that directs school districts to assist students in the paying of tuition and fees for courses at Michigan public or private colleges or universities if all of the following conditions are met:

  • Academic Dual Enrollment - To be eligible for dual enrollment in an academic area, a student must have taken all five High School MEAP Tests, and he or she must have received a state endorsement in the area in which he or she is planning to enroll.
  • Vocational Dual Enrollment - To be eligible for dual enrollment in a Career and Technical
Education area, a student must have achieved endorsement in ALL areas of the High School MEAP Test or have achieved endorsement in mathematics along with a qualifying score on a nationally- or industry-recognized job skills assessment test as determined by the Department of
    Career Development.
  • Juniors and seniors who receive  endorsements are eligible for dual enrollment courses in the endorsed content areas if the requested courses are not offered through L’Anse Creuse Public Schools.
  • A student requesting to take an academic course that is not tested by the High School MEAP (for example. world language, computers, or fine arts) must have taken all five tests in order to qualify. Again, only courses that are not offered through L’Anse Creuse Public Schools are eligible for tuition payment.
  • Students must be enrolled in both the school district and a post-secondary institution during the local school district’s regular academic year.
  • The college courses must be academic courses (as opposed to “activity courses”) and must be courses not offered by the district. Summer courses do not qualify for financial support.
  • Underclassmen who may be interested in taking advantage of this opportunity as a junior or a senior need to plan appropriate coursework. Further, the student will need to make arrangements to take the MEAP tests early if he or she wishes to begin dual enrollment as a junior.
  • Students who wish to participate in dual enrollment and meet the above criteria must apply to the college for admission. Proof of admission must be submitted along with a L’Anse Creuse application to the Director of Secondary Education. Applications are available from the counseling office. L’Anse Creuse Public Schools will not pay for a class unless it was pre-approved.
