Elementary Curriculum for
Second Grade - Spanish

Outcome 1: Speak in increasingly sophisticated sentences, demonstrating pronunciation and intonation of native speakers.

Vocabulary Development

  • Use words in Spanish to communicate number, color, size, shape and location.
  • Use words in Spanish for days of the week, months and seasons.
  • Create word webs to show how words and concepts are related.
  • Listen to native speakers in conversations, on audiotapes and through videos and use the vocabulary heard.
  • Consistently pronounce consonant sounds (/b/b,v; /k/c; /ch/ch; /d/d; /f/f; /g/g; /j/j; /l/l; /y/II; /m/m; /p/p; /r/r; /s/s; z; /t/t).

Outcome 2: Count as high in Spanish as in English.

  • Orally count, recognize numerals and read number words through 1,000 in Spanish.
  • Demonstrate real world counting and number knowledge through money exchanges and other simple situations.

Outcome 3: Interact comfortably with teachers and peers in Spanish.

Presenting Structured Information

  • Organize thoughts and ideas for oral presentations through diagrams and in print.
  • Explain events clearly and concisely.

Outcome 4: Listen and respond to more sophisticated Spanish materials.

Stories, Songs and Poems

  • Describe characters and their feelings from stories read aloud or read silently.

Videos and Television Programs

  • Demonstrate understanding by summarizing main idea of the content.

Outcome 5: Provide background information on people and places in the Spanish-speaking world.

  • Read a variety of books that provide background information and cultural relevance.
  • Obtain information about people and places in the Spanish-speaking world using an encyclopedia and maps.
  • Listen to a short presentation by Spanish-speaking community members in which they share information about themselves and their history.

Second Grade Spanish Adaptation

  • Addition/Subtraction: Numbers 1-50, simple addition/subtraction
  • Animal Habitat: Survival needs, animals and habitats
  • Days/Months/Seasons: Calendar, clothing, weather, hot, cold, warm, cool
  • Dinosaurs:  Diet, environment, size, behavior
  • Map Skills: Rural/urban, Spanish communities, tables/graphs
  • Solar System: Earth, sun, moon, movements, descriptions
  • Time: Vocabulary, telling time
