Elementary Curriculum for
Fifth Grade - Spanish

Outcome 1: Speak in increasingly sophisticated sentences, demonstrating pronunciation and intonation of native speakers.

Vocabulary Development

  • Use words in Spanish to communicate concepts related to self, family and school-related topics.
  • Use a Spanish-English/English-Spanish dictionary to find Spanish words and meanings.
  • Use a variety of words to explain an idea.

Constructing Language

  • Actively participate by contributing ideas in group discussions.
  • Dramatize characters from a story using dialogue and creative reenactments.

Outcome 2: Count as high in Spanish as in English.

  • Count, recognize numerals and read numbers nearly as high in Spanish as in English.
  • Demonstrate real world counting and number knowledge through money exchanges and other simple situations.

Outcome 3: Interact comfortably with teachers and peers in Spanish.

Presenting Structured Information

  • Organize thoughts and ideas for oral reports using an outline.
  • Locate specific information in print as a response to a written or spoken question.
  • Ask questions that elicit necessary information (directions, time).
  • Respond spontaneously to simple questions.

Outcome 4: Listen and respond to more sophisticated Spanish materials.

Stories, Songs and Poems

  • Recall major details of the story pilot and setting.
  • Describe characters and their feelings in detail.
  • Recall supporting details of the story plot and setting.
  • Describe characters and their feelings by considering own feelings and experiences.

Videos and Television Programs

  • Choose to listen to video and television programs in Spanish for entertainment.
  • Select to view video and television programs in Spanish for a purpose such as gathering information.

Outcome 5: Provide background information on people and places in the Spanish-speaking world.

  • Read a variety of culturally relevant stories and information.
  • Obtain information about people and places in the Spanish-speaking world using an encyclopedia, an atlas and maps.
  • Learn about people from various cultures and parts of the world who have made significant contributions to their chosen fields.
  • Interview a Spanish-speaking community member to gain understanding about his or her experiences.
  • Obtain information about people and places in the Spanish-speaking world through a variety of reference sources including encyclopedia, atlas, maps, almanac and computer databases and create a report or project.
  • Write about Spanish-speaking parts of the world by interpreting maps, tables and graphs.

Grade 5:

  • Cultural Diversity: Cultural and language differences across U.S.
  • Economics: Compare/contrast economies/money of countries
  • Multiplication/Division: Review 1-1,000,000 story problems, money usage
  • Space: Solar system, plants, movements, conditions
  • U.S. Government: Charts and graphs, contrast U.S. to Canada and Mexico
