Foundation Awards Mini-Grants to Teachers
The L’Anse Creuse Foundation awarded $20,290 in mini-grants to teachers throughout the L’Anse Creuse Public Schools’ district for the 2006-2007 school year at a Dec. 7 meeting with administrators, Board of Education members and Foundation Board members.
The Foundation has awarded almost $270,000 in mini-grants since 1991 to enhance curriculum. This year the Foundation awarded 21 grants such as Family Literacy Resource Library for Adult Education, Game On for mathematics, African Drumming Program, Creative Writing Take-Off Show from Brainstormers, Dinosaur Dig Assembly, Math Literacy Centered Class Library, Lego kits for Lego Robotics Club, Anatomy in Clay for a Health Occupations class and more.
Mini-grants are awarded based on creativity, student-centered ideas and experiential learning opportunities that enrich and extend the L’Anse Creuse Public Schools’ curriculum.
“I have been lucky enough to get a couple of Foundation mini-grants, and they’ve made it possible for me to do some really unique things with my art classes,” said Susan Smyk, teacher. “I’ve been able to have artists come in and share their work, have installed a tile wall, and have gotten the tools to teach the students about an Indonesian fiber art form. None of these would have been possible without the funds from the Foundation, due to their high cost.”
The L’Anse Creuse Foundation, founded in 1989, is an independent, non-profit organization that provides funds to L’Anse Creuse Public Schools’ students for enrichment programs and other projects aimed at enhancing their educational opportunities. The Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors consisting of individuals representing the business community, non-profit organizations, parents of students and members of the school staff.
