L'Anse Creuse Foundation awards annual grants to teachers
The L’Anse Creuse Foundation awarded $13,644 in teacher grants throughout the L’Anse Creuse Public Schools’ district for the 2007-2008 school year at a Dec. 7 meeting with administrators, Board of Education members and Foundation Board members.
The Foundation has awarded almost $284,000 in grants since 1991 to enhance curriculum. This year the Foundation awarded 20 grants such as Traveling Diego Rivera Mural, History and Cultural Program: Lewis and Clark’s Corp of Discovery, The Fine Art of Fluency, Walk Your Way to Health, Living Story Presentation: The Underground Railroad and more.
Grants are awarded based on creativity, student-centered ideas and experiential learning opportunities that enrich and extend the L’Anse Creuse Public Schools’ curriculum.
An African Drumming grant last year provided many benefits to an entire elementary school. "The district goal of meeting the diverse needs of students has definitely been accomplished", said music teacher Scarlett Treece. Many of the students who may been struggling in other areas of their education have been extremely successful in the African Drumming program, giving themselves a sense of pride and self-worth.
The Foundation also funded after-school activity busses to provide transportation to students who participated in tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The L’Anse Creuse Foundation, founded in 1989, is an independent, non-profit organization that provides funds to L’Anse Creuse Public Schools’ students for enrichment programs and other projects aimed at enhancing their educational opportunities. The Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors consisting of individuals representing the business community, non-profit organizations, parents and members of the school staff.
